At NSF, the CISE Education and Workforce (EWF) cluster aims to create equitable and inclusive opportunities for computing education and to develop a diverse workforce. EWF programs fund research and education activities that are intended to transform computing education, by building capacity for educators in primary and secondary school to teach computing concepts; creating novel curricula for integrating computational thinking and computer science concepts as critical components of formal K-12 education; reconceptualizing computing education in higher education; and integrating computing research and education—with a focus on broadening participation in order to overturn the longstanding exclusion and underrepresentation of women, persons with disabilities, African Americans, Hispanics, Native Americans, Alaskan Natives, and indigenous people in computing, achieving proportional representation in computing-focused degree programs in higher education and in the computing workforce.

This convening brings together program officers, principal investigators, and research community members to share research outcomes, with opportunities for PIs to share their research outcomes, promising practices, and lessons learned for the projects funded through the NSF CISE Education and Workforce programs. These programs share a common thread: advancing research for broadening participation of historically excluded groups in computing and for making equitable and inclusive computing education accessible and effective at a national scale. Projects represented includes those from the Broadening Participation in Computing (BPC) program;  Computer Science for All (CSforAll RPP and Research) program; computing-focused Improving Undergraduate STEM Education projects, including those from the IUSE: Computing in Undergraduate Education (IUSE:CUE) program; the STEM + Computing K-12 Education (STEM+C) program; and the Research Experiences for Teachers in Engineering and Computer Science program.

In addition to disseminating project findings, this meeting provides an opportunity for the CISE EWF community to discuss future directions for research, exploring novel ideas for broadening participation in computing, enhancing computing education, and improving workforce preparation—as well as how to grow the community of researchers and practitioners in these areas. The meeting provides an opportunity for networking and community building, with PIs identifying potential areas of alignment and possible future collaborations. Finally, this meeting provides program officers with a forum for sharing information about future NSF-wide priorities and the EWF vision with the PI community, and to meet with PIs to discuss project ideas, provide feedback, and answer questions.
